Sometimes it is necessary to tub your axolotl for health and safety reasons. This could include health reasons, tank cleaning, while you cycle a tank, moving the axolotl to a different location, etc.  When use the term “tubbing” meaning to place it in a plastic tub/container as a temporary housing situation.

  • When tubbing your axolotl be sure to keep them in clean dechlorinated water (use only Seachem Prime to dechlorinate)  The water must be changed daily, at 100 %. This is required for all tubbing periods greater than a day/24hrs.

  • Always rinse and clean bottom and sides of your container by wiping them down when doing water changes to remove any buildup.

  • The tub should have enough space for them to move around and deep enough so they can be completely under water.

  • It is possible for axolotls to jump out of the tub, but it is not common. To avoid this from potentially happening you can use a ventilated lid on the tub or a cooling rack often seen used for cooling baked goods is another great option to prevent axolotls from mistakenly jumping out of their container.
