What is an axolotl?
Scientific name: Ambystoma Mexicanum
Type: Amphibian
Average life span: 10-15 years
Size: up to 12”
Origin: Lake Xochimilco, Mexico City
Critically endangered in the wild due to pollution & invasive species introduced into the canals that now make up Lake Xochimilco.
Remain in their juvenile, or neotenic, state their entire lives and are fully aquatic.
An important part of Aztec mythology, the Aztec god Xolotl who was said to have shape shifted into an axolotl to hide from having to sacrifice his twin brother.
They have been used in research for over 200 years for their ability to regenerate limbs and resist cancer.
They use their gills to breathe underwater.
They have delicate skin with a very thin slim coat on the top to protect it. They are a “look and dont touch” pet, like fish are not ment to be held and taken out of the water.
